...in Israel?
LHIYS was created because Israel's elite scientific and
medical research institutions are a source of great pride
and a tremendous though perhaps underutilized educational
resource for Jewish people worldwide. Israel has been at the
cutting edge of scientific and medical research, and applied
research, for several decades.
As evidence:
Three Israeli scientists have earned Nobel prizes
Israeli companies regularly produce world-class medical devices and biotech innovations that directly save lives
Israel
is at the forefront of research in medical diagnostics,
laser applications, computer chip technology, cellular
phone technology, solar power, and irrigation technology
Israel has the third highest rate of entrepreneurship in the world, and earns second place for venture capital funds (right behind the U.S.)1
Israel produces more scientific papers per capita than any other nation by a large margin, and it ranks among the top nations worldwide in terms of patents filed relative to the population2
Israeli
technological know-how fuels the private sector in a way
that it is a "technology tiger" among nations
...with Jewish Studies?
LHIYS also grows out of the Jewish community's need to
groom future leaders whose actions complement the
enormous responsibilities we place upon our clergy,
educators and social service agencies. We need committed
Jewish lay leaders to serve as congregational presidents
as well as serve meals to the elderly; individuals who
stand up among their peers and initiate an Israel Action
Committee, organize protests, create exhibits, and to
participate in Shabbatons and mitzvah projects.
Consequently, Legacy Heritage Programming LLC, the
sponsor of LHIYS, seeks to develop a cohort group that
not only will be at the forefront of science in the
future, but also will contribute substantially to the
Jewish community around them, and feel privileged to do
so.
